Historical Instruments

Prized by contemporary performers for their quality of tone and response, older instruments can be expensive to acquire and most likely will not have retained their original set-ups over the years. In such a case, the period player may want to reconvert the instrument - a procedure that is certainly merited if the instrument is of good quality. Specifics might include shortening the fingerboard, resetting the neck at a less acute angle, thinning the bass bar, and using a lighter soundpost, tailpiece and period-style bridge, etc. There are a number of dealer/specialists for period instruments and maintenance, but any reputable repairperson should also be able to make these kinds of adjustments.

Often, however, it is more feasible to contact a luthier directly, who can make an instrument specially for you, or who may know of one for sale. Additionally, some of these luthiers are experts at repairing and restoring instruments. For those desiring a bass violin, a specific model or type of viola da gamba, or one of the more obscure types of double bass (such as the G or D violone), a commision is almost a necessity since finding one of these instruments extant is particularly rare. Prices and waiting periods vary widely from one shop to the next, so it is worth looking around.
