A Dowland Antology:
Divers Lyra-lessons publisht by strangers
34 distinct settings of 13 pieces associated with Dowland’s name are to be found in different 16th and 17th century viol manuscripts. These are notated entirely in tablature and require the use of different tunings. Viol players will be pleased to find many of their very favourite Dowland tunes represented. The famous Lachrimae exists in three viol settings, none of which match each other, let alone correspond precisely to Dowland's original lute version. We cannot know with any authority who created most of the viol arrangements but these are tuneful, varied, challenging, substantial pieces. They often have varied repeats, filling out the piece in complexity and length. Many include ornaments. And their notation in tablature informs exactly where on the instrument notes are to be fingered.
This anthology is presented as two volumes. The first is designed for study and comparison, providing score transcriptions (staff notation with the original tablature underlaid) of all the pieces. The second volume is intended for performance (tablature only), with pieces arranged according to their tuning. This way, a player may sit down and enjoy the 14 settings that call for f f e f f (normal) tuning, or the seven settings in f f h f h (Alfonso way) before changing scordatura.
