Publications Most historical performers rely heavily on the use of facsimiles (photographic reproductions of original documents) and urtext editions (which don't have any modern markings) for performance and scholarly study. In recent years, many publishers have jumped on the bandwagon, resulting in a huge number of printed primary resources, as well as reliable modern editions. Because new prints are being issued with such rapidity, historical scholars and performers often like to monitor the publishers' catalogues (see the list beow) themselves. For those designing concert programs, or those who want to assess the scope of a specific repertoire, these lists may be particularly useful, if not enlightening. Orders can usually be placed directly with the publishing house, or requested through a local book or music seller. Similarly, books about the history, performance, repertoire and performers of period instruments are also gaining popularity. In addition to the publishers themselves, a number of specialty early music shops maintain online businesses, stocking items that are of common interest to specialists in the field. Browsing these sites may often turn up an item that one never knew existed.
