Joëlle Morton performs professionally on violas da gamba, violone and double bass. Active primarily as a soloist and chamber musician, she works in the US, Canada and Europe, directing the Scaramella chamber series in Toronto, as a founding member of Sympatica in New York City, and making regular appearances with Tafelmusik, the New York Collegium, the Musicians in Ordinary, Parthenia—A Consort of Viols, Artek, Philomel, Concert Royal, Brandywine Baroque and Ensemble Soleil. In addition to performing and teaching, Joëlle is much in demand as a musicologist and clinician, presenting lecture/demos on the history and development of string instruments at conservatories and universities throughout the US. Her scholarly articles have appeared in the JVdGSA, Double Bassist magazine and Bass World; she has published several editions of music for lyra viol (available from PRB Productions) and she serves as general editor for the publications of the International Society of Bassists. Joëlle studied viola da gamba with Wendy Gillespie, Mary Springfels and James Tyler and earned her Doctorate in Early Music Performance at the University of Southern California, and she may be heard on recent recordings with Concert Royal, Musica Viva, Ensemble de'Medici, the Los Angeles Baroque Orchestra and Celtic harpist Lynette Johnson.
